Hoary vervain (Verbena stricta) is a robust perennial plant that typically reaches up to 120 cm in height. It is characterized by its upright, slightly hairy stems and opposite, lance-shaped, serrated leaves of a vibrant green. The flowers, which appear from July to September, form terminal inflorescences in spikes, featuring small tubular flowers that are mauve or purple in colour, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Hoary vervain prefers well-drained soils and thrives in full sunlight, often found in prairies and along roadsides. It is a hardy plant, capable of tolerating dry conditions and poor soils once established.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The leaves can be used in infusions, particularly to relieve stomach aches.
Ecological Role
Hoary vervain plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. As a source of nectar, it attracts a variety of pollinators, contributing to the pollination of surrounding crops. Its drought resistance also makes it an excellent plant for stabilizing soils, especially in erosion-prone areas. By promoting biodiversity, it provides habitat and food resources for many insects and other animals.
Hoary vervain seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
