Hoary vervain (Verbena stricta) is a robust perennial plant that typically reaches up to 120 cm in height. It is characterized by its upright, slightly hairy stems and opposite, lance-shaped, serrated leaves of a vibrant green. The flowers, which appear from July to September, form terminal inflorescences in spikes, featuring small tubular flowers that are mauve or purple in colour, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Hoary vervain prefers well-drained soils and thrives in full sunlight, often found in prairies and along roadsides. It is a hardy plant, capable of tolerating dry conditions and poor soils once established.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The leaves can be used in infusions, particularly to relieve stomach aches.

Ecological Role
Hoary vervain plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. As a source of nectar, it attracts a variety of pollinators, contributing to the pollination of surrounding crops. Its drought resistance also makes it an excellent plant for stabilizing soils, especially in erosion-prone areas. By promoting biodiversity, it provides habitat and food resources for many insects and other animals.

Hoary vervain seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Hoary Vervain

A 60-day cold stratification is required to ensure germination of hoary vervain seeds. Mix the seeds with a moist medium (vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

Surface sow the seeds in a light, well-drained potting mix, maintaining constant moisture. Germination can take 20 to 30 days.

Once transplanted, hoary vervain prefers full sun and well-drained soils, even if they are low in nutrients. Watering is essential during the first few weeks, but once established, this plant is quite drought-resistant. To encourage continuous blooming, it is advisable to deadhead spent flowers, which can also reduce seed production. Hoary vervain is generally disease-resistant and attracts numerous pollinators, making it an excellent choice for natural gardens and restored prairies.
