The accelerated disappearance of living species, closely linked to human activities and climate change, is weakening natural environments and their ability to fulfill vital functions for all living beings, including humans. In response to this crisis, ecological restoration begins first and foremost with the plants and habitats that support biodiversity. Yet at a time when ecological restoration is more urgent than ever, the availability of native seeds in Canada is dramatically insufficient. As a result, the vast majority of native plant seeds are imported from the United States — poorly adapted to local conditions — placing us at both an ecological and economic disadvantage. Akène aims to turn this paradox into a lever for action. By cultivating and harvesting native seeds in Quebec — on our own land and in collaboration with partners across the province — we are helping to build a truly local industry. Our mission: to catalyze native seed production and develop seed sovereignty in Eastern Canada. Whether for a project in the forest, in the city, along a roadside, on a riverbank, in a garden… or even on a balcony, Akène makes it possible to restore habitats that take lasting root in their environment, through seeds perfectly adapted to local conditions.
