2. Growing Notes and Planting

What does "cold stratification" mean, and how is it done?

Cold stratification involves exposing seeds to winter conditions to allow germination. It can be done:

  • Outdoors (fall sowing): Sow in the fall and let nature do the work.
  • In the refrigerator: Place the seeds in a moist substrate (like vermiculite) for 60 days before spring sowing.

→ For more information on cold stratification, check out our article on the topic.

Should I stratify my seeds before sowing?

Some species require cold stratification. If you sow in the fall, stratification will occur naturally outdoors. For more information, check the growing notes on each product page.

→ For more information on cold stratification, check out our article on the topic.

Can I sow directly in the fall without stratification?

Yes, fall sowing allows for natural stratification. Sow before the first frosts and lightly mix the seeds into the soil without burying them too deeply.

How much substrate should I use for stratification?

For our small seed packets, use about 3-4 teaspoons of substrate. For mixes, 3-4 cups are sufficient.

Get vermiculite for your stratification needs.

Should I bury the seeds during fall sowing?

Lightly mix them into the soil to ensure proper coverage, but do not bury them too deeply.

Where can I find information on seed cultivation?

Each product page has a dedicated section called "Growing Notes" with instructions on stratification, planting, and specific species requirements.

Which mixes do you recommend for a septic field?

Our Partial Shade Mix is suitable for septic fields, as its plants do not have excessively deep roots. For a custom mix, contact us.

Which plants do you recommend to prevent soil erosion?

Deep-rooted and dense plants play a key role in preventing erosion by stabilizing the soil and reducing runoff. It is best to select species adapted to local conditions and specific soil types. Here are some available in our store:

Check out our Riparian Buffer Collection for plants suited to slopes or erosion-prone soils.

Can I sow riparian buffer mixes in a rain garden?
