Painted Trillium (Trillidium undulatum) is a perennial native to eastern North America’s humid forests. It grows up to 45 cm in height and is characterized by its three large, oval, wavy green leaves, arranged in a whorl at the top of a slender stem. In the spring, painted trillium produces a single delicate flower with three white petals, marked with pinkish-red streaks at their base, giving it a painted appearance. This plant thrives in shaded, acidic understory environments, adding a graceful and colourful touch to woodland gardens.
Ecological roles
Painted trillium plays an important ecological role in the understory. Its early blooming attracts pollinators, especially bees, which assist in understory plant pollination in the spring. The small bright red berries it produces at the end of the season provide food for small animals and birds, contributing to seed dispersal and forest floor regeneration.
Painted trillium seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
