No, we don’t grow tobacco for smoking, but rather for its ornamental appeal and ecological benefits! "Little Canadian" tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a hardy annual that adapts well to almost any type of soil. It produces large green leaves and beautiful pink flowers that bloom abundantly all summer, attracting numerous pollinators. This heritage variety, cultivated in Quebec for over a century, is both resilient and early-blooming, making it a versatile choice for various soil types. Beyond its beauty, Little Canadian tobacco acts as a natural repellent against carrot flies and flea beetles, making it an excellent companion plant in the vegetable garden.

Ecological Roles
Little Canadian tobacco plays an important ecological role by attracting various pollinators with its colourful, fragrant flowers. As a natural repellent, it can also be used to deter pests: soaking its leaves in water for a few weeks creates a natural insecticide that can be sprayed on other vulnerable plants. Growing Little Canadian tobacco in the garden supports biodiversity by providing a resource for pollinators and offering an eco-friendly solution for pest control.

Growing Notes | Seeds - 'Little Canadian' Tobacco

Growing tobacco is relatively straightforward, but the tiny seeds, as small as grains of sand, can make planting a bit tricky. Here are some tips to help with indoor seeding, ideally started in mid-April.

Prepare one or two containers with a pre-moistened seed-starting mix. Tobacco seeds need light to germinate, so avoid covering them with soil. Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the surface and press them down gently to ensure good contact with the soil. Lightly mist the seeds to keep them moist.

To prevent the seeds from clumping in one corner due to watering, continue keeping the soil surface moist by misting periodically. Also, ensure the temperature is kept at a minimum of 21°C.

Seedlings will begin to emerge within 7 to 20 days, but wait until several have developed two true leaves (beyond just the cotyledons). At this stage, prepare new containers filled with soil to transplant them individually.

Use a stick or a chopstick to gently lift each seedling from below the roots and transfer it to its own container.

Keep the seedlings in warm, humid conditions until the last frost has passed, then transplant them into the garden after a period of outdoor acclimatization.
