Azure bluets (Houstonia caerulea) is a small native perennial plant that typically grows to 5 to 10 cm in height. It is distinguished by its delicate flowers, pale blue to almost white with a bright yellow center, which bloom in the spring and early summer. Its dark green foliage forms a low rosette, and its slender stems bear flowers in light clusters. Adapted to well-drained soils, azure bluets thrive in open meadows, natural lawns, and the edges of clear woodlands, adding a subtle touch of colour to open and partially shaded spaces.
Ecological Roles
Azure bluets attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, which are drawn to its nectar in the spring. By providing an early source of food, it supports local biodiversity and offers habitat for pollinating insects. It also contributes to soil stability in lawns and natural meadows, where it forms low, dense colonies.
Azure bluets seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
