Pineappleweed (Matricaria matricarioides), originally from British Columbia and now naturalized in Quebec, is a small wild chamomile with a distinctive pineapple scent. This aromatic and medicinal plant, reaching up to 20 cm in height, often grows near inhabited areas, along roads, sidewalks, and in pavement cracks. However, by cultivating it in a designated area of your garden, you can enjoy clean, healthy plants. Its delicate leaves can add a floral touch to salads, and its fragrance makes it a popular ingredient for teas, beverages, and even for fermenting water kefir, often combined with staghorn sumac.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Pineappleweed has medicinal properties similar to other chamomiles. It is mildly sedative, antispasmodic, digestive, and carminative. Used in infusions, it is commonly employed to ease menstrual discomfort, relieve nervous tension, and promote relaxation. In cooking, its aromatic leaves can be added to salads, while its flowers and leaves are used to prepare soothing teas. Its digestive and carminative properties also make it a natural choice for mild gastric issues.

Ecological Roles
Pineappleweed attracts various pollinators, such as bees, drawn to its small, discrete flowers. Although often found spontaneously along roadsides, it can be intentionally incorporated into naturalized gardens to benefit from its ecological and medicinal attributes. By creating a dedicated spot for pineappleweed, you contribute to local biodiversity and ensure easy access to this aromatic, versatile plant.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Pineappleweed

Pineappleweed thrives around garden edges. Seeds can be scattered along flower beds, pathways, or in the garden on cleared, weed-free soil.

In our gardens, we have reserved a more compact corner of the vegetable patch where it seems to thrive. You can direct-sow these seeds early in the spring or in the fall, and they will germinate in the spring as the soil warms up.

You can also start seeds indoors to give them a head start for their first growing season.
