Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), also known as Canada beadruby, is a small native perennial plant found in the shaded forests and acidic soils of North America. It typically grows between 5 and 10 cm tall and is distinguished by its heart-shaped leaves, bright green and often veined. In the spring, it produces delicate clusters of small star-shaped white flowers atop short stems, which turn into reddish berries by the end of summer. This plant is ideal for shaded gardens and woodland plantings.

Ecological Role
Canada mayflower plays an important role in forest ecosystems, providing a food source for some small mammals and birds that consume its berries. As a ground cover plant, it helps stabilize forest soils and prevent erosion. In naturalistic gardens, it attracts various pollinating insects during its bloom and adds a natural touch to the forest floor cover.

Growing Notes | Pre-stratified seeds - Canada Mayflower

Our Canada Mayflower seeds are already stratified and ready to germinate. To prevent the seedlings from spending too much time indoors, however, it is recommended to start indoor seedlings only from the end of January.

Sow the seeds in a light, acidic, well-drained compost, about 10mm deep. Germination can be slow, but normally occurs in 2-4 weeks, so make sure the compost does not dry out during this time. Young plants can take several years to reach full maturity.

Canada mayflower prefers moist, organically rich soils, growing best under dense canopy cover that provides partial to full shade. Once established, it requires little maintenance, but maintaining adequate moisture levels is essential. Mulching with fallen leaves or organic matter can help conserve soil moisture. This plant spreads by its rhizomes, slowly forming colonies that can spread to suitable areas. Division of clumps can be done in the spring to encourage growth.
