Canadian serviceberry, also known as juneberry, shadbush, and shadblow serviceberry, is a shrub or small tree that can reach 5 to 10 metres in height. It is particularly valued for its fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by edible reddish-purple berries in summer that attract a wide variety of birds. In the fall, its leaves take on vibrant shades of red and orange. This shrub is extremely adaptable, thriving in both full sun and partial shade, in well-drained soils that are acidic to slightly alkaline, and it even tolerates clayey and moist soils.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Serviceberries are not only enjoyed by birds but are also popular with humans. They can be used to make jams, pies, and syrups. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, they have a sweet flavour reminiscent of blueberries.

Ecological Role
Canadian serviceberry plays a key role as a host plant for several butterfly species, including the Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) and the White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis), which rely on this shrub for their larvae. Additionally, its early spring flowers are a source of pollen for native bees and other pollinators. Its berries nourish birds such as cardinals and orioles, contributing to local biodiversity.

Serviceberry seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Canadian Serviceberry

Serviceberry seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy.
Mix the seeds with moist vermiculite and place them in an airtight bag in the refrigerator for 90 days. After stratification, sow them on the surface of well-drained soil. The seedlings should be kept moist but not overly wet. Germination may take several weeks. Once the young plants are established, they can be transplanted into well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

Canadian serviceberry is relatively easy to maintain. Light watering is recommended after planting, but once well-established, it is drought-tolerant. Pruning is not necessary, though it can be pruned after flowering to maintain an attractive shape.
