Lance-leaved tickseed (Coreopsis lanceolata) is a highly valued perennial plant known for its long stems bearing bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers that bloom from early summer to fall. These vibrant flowers add a burst of colour to gardens and are particularly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. The deep green, lance-shaped foliage provides a pleasant contrast to the bright blooms. Adapted to well-drained soils, this plant thrives in full sun but is drought-tolerant once well established, making it an excellent choice for water-efficient gardens or dry climates. Lance-leaved tickseed is also capable of thriving in poor or rocky soils, contributing to its popularity as a hardy and easy-to-grow plant.

Ecological Roles
Lance-leaved tickseed plays a significant role in garden ecosystems by attracting a variety of pollinators, especially butterflies, thanks to its nectar-rich flowers. In addition to supporting biodiversity, this perennial helps stabilize soils in difficult areas, particularly in poor or rocky conditions where few plants thrive. With its drought tolerance and low water requirements, it is ideal for sustainable gardening or gardens located in dry climates. Lance-leaved tickseed is not only a beautiful ornamental plant but also a key element for promoting resilient and eco-friendly gardening practices.

Lance-leaved tickseed seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Lance-leaved Tickseed

Here is a popular choice for beginner gardeners, as lance-leaved tickseed is easy to grow and produces flowers quickly.

Direct sow in late fall by planting the seeds just below the soil surface; lance-leaved tickseed seeds need light to germinate. For spring sowing, mix the seeds with moist sand and store them in the refrigerator for 60 days before direct sowing. Keep the soil evenly moist until germination, which should occur within 10 to 15 days. You can also start the seeds in pots 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost; sow the seeds on the surface of a seed-starting mix, keep the mix moist, and then transplant them into the garden.

Lance-leaved tickseed adapts to almost any type of soil. Water it occasionally until it is well-established. After that, it will thrive in dry, well-drained soil. If flowering diminishes mid-season, encourage a second bloom by cutting the plant back by half to promote new growth.
