Creeping Jacob's ladder (Polemonium reptans), also known as 'Jacob's Ladder,' is a delicate perennial with slender stems bearing pinnate leaves. These leaflets are arranged in pairs along the stem, resembling ladder rungs. Its small bell-shaped flowers, ranging from pale blue to violet and occasionally white, are clustered in terminal bunches, adding a subtle charm to the garden. Blooming in spring and early summer, it lights up humid meadows, open woodlands, forest edges, and stream banks, thriving in rich, well-drained soils high in organic matter.
Ecological Roles
Creeping Jacob's ladder is valuable for local ecosystems, especially in spring when its flowers attract various pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. Its early-season blooms provide an essential food source for these insects. By cultivating this plant in naturalistic gardens, we create a welcoming habitat for pollinators and enhance the plant diversity of wetland areas, edges, and woodlands.
Creeping Jacob's ladder seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
