Nodding bur marigold (Bidens cernua) is an annual or biennial plant with bright yellow flowers resembling small daisies, which bloom in late summer and fall. Its sturdy stems and dense green foliage make it an excellent addition to water gardens or wetland areas, offering vibrant colour and a food source for insects at a time of year when many other plants begin to fade. Later in the fall, its seeds provide a valuable food source for ducks and various seed-eating birds.
This plant prefers consistently moist to swampy soils and thrives in full sun or partial shade. It is ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, or wetland areas in the garden. However, nodding bur marigold is also known for its ability to adapt to diverse soil conditions.

Ecological Roles
Nodding bur marigold plays an essential role in water filtration and purification. Its roots and plant structure help stabilize sediments and can contribute to reducing erosion. This plant also absorbs excess nutrients from water, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which helps control eutrophication of water bodies.
By growing in wetland areas, it helps maintain water balance in these ecosystems. It can modulate water flow and aid in preventing flooding by absorbing excess water during heavy rains. Additionally, its seeds and flowers support local wildlife, including pollinators and seed-eating birds.

Nodding bur marigold seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Nodding Bur Marigold

A 60-day cold stratification period is recommended for nodding bur marigold seeds.

Simply mix one part seeds with three parts moist sand or vermiculite, then place the mixture in an airtight bag in the refrigerator for about 60 days. Once stratified, the seeds can be sown directly outdoors in the spring or started indoors in containers, sowing them 5 mm deep.

Alternatively, you can sow them directly in place in the fall, allowing natural stratification to occur outdoors. However, this method may result in a lower germination rate.

Nodding bur marigold prefers moist to muddy soils and can adapt to clay or sandy conditions. It does not tolerate drought and will require watering during dry periods or if the soil is not naturally wet. Although it is an annual, nodding bur marigold will spread through self-seeding.

The seeds cling strongly to clothing and animal fur, so it is advisable not to plant them too close to high-traffic areas.
