Wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) is a small, creeping herbaceous perennial that typically reaches around 15 cm in height. It produces white, five-petaled flowers in spring, followed by small, edible red fruits in summer. Its leaves, composed of three toothed leaflets, are bright green and slightly hairy on the underside. This plant prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils, although it can tolerate a range of conditions, including poor soils. Naturally found in meadows, open woodlands, and sunny embankments, the wild strawberry is very hardy, withstanding Quebec's cold winters well.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The entire plant is antiseptic, astringent, emmenagogue, galactagogue, and odontalgic. An infusion made from the leaves has been used as a nerve tonic and has mildly astringent properties. A root infusion is diuretic. The fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, cooked, or preserved. Though small, it is delicious, and can reach up to 20 mm in diametre. The dried leaves make a pleasant tea.

Ecological Role
Wild strawberry plays a vital role in local biodiversity. Its fruits provide food for many birds and small mammals, while its flowers attract native bees and other pollinators with their nectar. The plant’s runners also help stabilize soil, thus preventing erosion in open habitats. Additionally, it offers shelter to various insects, contributing to biodiversity in open grasslands and forested areas.

Wild strawberry seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Wild Strawberry

Wild strawberry seeds benefit from cold stratification to enhance germination. To do this, mix the seeds with moist vermiculite, place them in an airtight bag, and store them in the refrigerator for about 15 days. After this period, sow the seeds on the surface of a light, well-draining substrate, being careful not to bury them deeply, as they require light to germinate. Germination can take between 30 and 60 days.

Wild strawberry prefers slightly acidic, organic-rich soil, although it can also tolerate poorer soils. It grows best in full sun but can adapt to partial shade. Once established, it is relatively drought-resistant and spreads quickly through its runners, forming a dense mat. Regular watering is advisable during the first few weeks after planting, but it requires little maintenance afterward. To encourage good fruit production, weed regularly and ensure that the plants are not overly crowded by other vegetation.
