False Solomon's seal (Maianthemum racemosum) is a perennial native to North American woodlands, known for its early blooming. It can grow up to 75 cm in height and features arching stems with lance-shaped, petiole-less leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The leaves are deep green with prominent veins. In the spring, small, fragrant white flowers appear in dense clusters at the tip of the stem. In the fall, the flowers turn into decorative fruits, initially green with red spots, and later becoming fully red when mature.

Ecological Roles
False Solomon's seal plays an important role in forest ecosystems. Its white flowers attract bees and other pollinators in spring, while its reddish berries provide a food source for certain birds and small mammals in the fall. As a woodland plant, it helps stabilize forest soils and supports woodland garden biodiversity.

False Solomon's seal seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - False Solomon's Seal

False Solomon's seal seeds must remain moist and require a double cold stratification to germinate—two 90-day cold periods separated by a 30-day room temperature period. It is possible to sow fresh seeds in the fall, but germination may take two winters. At Akène, we prefer to propagate it with seedlings that we transplant to the garden or forest.

We have already started the first cold stratification after the harvest in late August, and the seeds are now at room temperature, awaiting their second cold stratification. When you receive the seeds, keep them at room temperature until the end of December, then place them in the refrigerator from January to March.

Monitor the seeds regularly, as it is not uncommon for germination to begin during the second cold stratification in the refrigerator. If you notice germination signs, you can sow all the seeds.

For sowing, use a light, well-drained soil mix, but ensure it never dries out completely.

False Solomon's seal prefers loamy, well-drained soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mix of garden soil with compost works well, though in our experience, it thrives in a rich forest soil without any amendments.
