Round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) is a small perennial carnivorous plant found primarily in bogs and wetland areas of Quebec. It is characterized by its round leaves covered in red glandular hairs that secrete a sticky substance, allowing it to trap small insects. In summer, the plant produces slender stalks with delicate white or pinkish flowers, adding a touch of beauty to wetland environments. Round-leaved sundew thrives in nutrient-poor, typically acidic and very moist soils.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Round-leaved sundew has been traditionally used for its antispasmodic and expectorant properties. The leaves are harvested to treat respiratory conditions, including coughs, bronchitis, and asthma.

Ecological Roles
Round-leaved sundew plays a crucial role in bog ecosystems. As a carnivorous plant, it traps small insects to supplement its nutrient needs in poor soils, helping regulate local insect populations. This plant also contributes to the biodiversity of bogs, which are rare and fragile environments, and helps with water retention and the stability of these wetland areas. The round-leaved sundew is not only a botanical curiosity but also a key species in maintaining wetland ecosystems balance.

Round-leaved sundew seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Round-leaved Sundew

Round-leaved sundew seeds require cold stratification to improve germination. To do this, mix the seeds with moist vermiculite and place the mixture in the refrigerator for about 90 days. After this period, sow the seeds on the surface of a light and acidic substrate, such as peat or a peat-perlite mix, without covering them, as they need light to germinate.

This plant thrives in full sun and consistently moist soils. Avoid nutrient-rich soils, as this could hinder its growth. Regular watering is essential, and it is important to use distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral buildup. Once established, round-leaved sundew is relatively disease-resistant and requires minimal maintenance. However, to encourage healthy growth and flowering, it is recommended to regularly remove dead leaves or debris around the plant.
