Flat-top white aster (Doellingeria umbellata) is one of the most imposing asters in Quebec, reaching heights of up to 1.75 metres. Its long, sturdy stems culminate in dense clusters of white flowers with yellow centers, which bloom from July to September. These flowers are particularly attractive to pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and other insects that find an abundant source of nectar. Preferring moist, well-drained soils, the flat-top white aster thrives in cool environments, making it an ideal choice for shorelines, wetlands, and forest edges. Its generous flowering also makes it a valuable aesthetic and ecological addition to naturalized gardens.
Ecological Role
In Quebec's ecosystems, the flat-top white aster plays an important role in supporting a diverse biodiversity. Its flowers attract numerous late-season pollinators, providing a nectar source at a time when other resources are scarce. Additionally, its preference for moist soils and its dense root network contribute to preventing bank erosion, stabilizing soils, and enriching the biodiversity of wetland habitats.
Flat-top white aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
