Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum) is a majestic perennial native to North America, reaching up to 2.75 metres in height. Its large, opposite leaves are fused at the base, forming a natural “cup” around the stem—hence its common name. This unique feature allows the plant to collect rainwater, providing a drinking source for pollinators and birds. In summer, bright yellow flowers bloom at the top of its sturdy stems, adding a dramatic touch to flower beds and borders. Well-suited to moist soils, cup plant is also ideal for stabilizing stream banks.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Cup plant has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, its roots and leaves were used in decoctions to relieve fevers and treat minor infections. Though less commonly used in modern herbal medicine, it remains valued for its therapeutic properties.
Ecological Roles
Cup plant plays an important ecological role by offering a water source for insects and birds through the “cup” formed by its leaves. In the fall, its seeds serve as a food source for goldfinches and other birds, while its flowers attract numerous pollinators, including bees and butterflies, supporting biodiversity. As a hardy and adaptable plant, it contributes to stabilizing moist soils and fosters a rich habitat of ecological interactions in naturalized gardens and riparian areas.
Cup plant seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
