European marsh-mallow (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial plant, both ornamental and medicinal, once cultivated to make marshmallows from its root. It can reach up to two metres in height and offers a prolonged bloom of white flowers delicately tinged with pink, adding an elegant touch to gardens. Its flowers are edible, and the plant is valued for its anti-inflammatory, cough-relieving, decongestant, and emollient properties. European marsh-mallow thrives in full sun and prefers rich, well-drained soil. The roots can be harvested for medicinal use starting in the third year, ideally at the end of the growing season.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
European marsh-mallow possesses a variety of medicinal properties. Its roots, leaves, and flowers are emollient, soothing, cough-suppressing, and anti-inflammatory. As an infusion, the roots are particularly effective for soothing throat and respiratory inflammations, relieving coughs, decongesting, and reducing mucous membrane irritation. The plant is also used to treat gastrointestinal issues and skin irritations. Externally, a preparation of the root or leaves can be applied to wounds and burns to promote healing and relieve pain.
Ecological Roles
European marsh-mallow attracts various pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, thanks to its prolonged and abundant flowering, supporting biodiversity and local pollinator populations, especially in naturalized gardens and riparian zones in Quebec. Additionally, its deep roots help stabilize soil, making it valuable for erosion prevention in wet or riparian areas.
