Red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) is a large native shrub that thrives in rich, moist soils but can also adapt to a variety of conditions. Reaching up to 2 metres in height, it is especially valued for its bark, which turns deep red after the first frosts, giving it its common name. In summer, it produces clusters of creamy white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These flowers are followed by small white fruits, which serve as a valuable food source for many bird species. Red-osier dogwood is often used to create natural borders and is highly effective in stabilizing stream banks and slopes thanks to its dense root system.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The bark and roots of red-osier dogwood have astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ecological Roles
Red-osier dogwood plays a crucial role in local ecosystems, particularly in wetlands and along waterways. Its nectar-rich flowers attract a wide variety of pollinators, such as bees, supporting biodiversity. In late season, its white fruits provide nourishment for many bird species. This shrub is also widely used for soil stabilization, particularly in areas prone to erosion, like stream banks and slopes, thanks to its well-anchored, dense root system. In winter, its bright red bark adds visual interest while providing habitat and protection for small wildlife and certain insects.

Red-osier dogwood seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Red-osier Dogwood

A 90-day cold stratification period and scarification are necessary to ensure germination of red-osier dogwood seeds.

Scarification: Gently rub the seeds between two sheets of fine sandpaper, being careful not to press too hard to avoid damaging the seeds. The goal is not to completely remove the seed coat (the tegument) but to slightly damage it to facilitate water absorption (imbibition). After scarification, soak the seeds in water at room temperature for 24 hours.

Stratification: After soaking, mix the seeds with a moist substrate (such as vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 90 days.

Once stratification is complete, sow the seeds 10 mm deep. Ensure the soil remains moist while the seedlings establish themselves.

For red-osier dogwood, you can expect a germination rate of 70 to 85%.

Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when the first true leaves appear, and then into 1-gallon pots in the spring. Grow the seedlings in containers for their first season before planting them outdoors in the fall.

Alternatively, you can sow seeds directly outdoors in the fall, allowing natural stratification to occur, though the germination rate may be lower.
