Red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) is a large native shrub that thrives in rich, moist soils but can also adapt to a variety of conditions. Reaching up to 2 metres in height, it is especially valued for its bark, which turns deep red after the first frosts, giving it its common name. In summer, it produces clusters of creamy white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These flowers are followed by small white fruits, which serve as a valuable food source for many bird species. Red-osier dogwood is often used to create natural borders and is highly effective in stabilizing stream banks and slopes thanks to its dense root system.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The bark and roots of red-osier dogwood have astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ecological Roles
Red-osier dogwood plays a crucial role in local ecosystems, particularly in wetlands and along waterways. Its nectar-rich flowers attract a wide variety of pollinators, such as bees, supporting biodiversity. In late season, its white fruits provide nourishment for many bird species. This shrub is also widely used for soil stabilization, particularly in areas prone to erosion, like stream banks and slopes, thanks to its well-anchored, dense root system. In winter, its bright red bark adds visual interest while providing habitat and protection for small wildlife and certain insects.
Red-osier dogwood seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
