Common water parsnip (Sium suave) is a perennial plant native to the wetlands of Quebec, recognizable by its hollow, slender stem that can reach up to 1 metre in height. Its compound, deeply divided, bright green leaves spread elegantly around its stem, contrasting with its umbrella-like inflorescences. From July to September, small white flowers bloom in delicate clusters, adding a light, airy touch to riverbanks, marshes, and ditches. Adapted to wet, nutrient-rich soils, common water parsnip thrives in sunny or partially shaded areas, bringing freshness and biodiversity to these environments.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The root of common water parsnip is edible  and has a pleasant, slightly nutty flavour.  It is typically harvested in spring or fall. Common water parsnip can be confused with poisonous water hemlock, which is dangerously toxic.

Ecological Role
Common water parsnip plays an important role in Quebec's wetland ecosystems. Its flowers attract many pollinators, including bees and certain beetles. The hollow stems and thick roots provide habitat for aquatic microfauna, while its root system helps stabilize riverbanks, reducing soil erosion in wet environments. With its ability to thrive in moist conditions and integrate into wetland ecosystems, common water parsnip promotes biodiversity and enhances riparian habitats.

Common water parsnip seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Common Water Parsnip

Common water parsnip seeds require a 60-day cold stratification period to facilitate germination. Simply mix one part seeds with three parts moist sand or vermiculite, then place the mixture in an airtight bag in the fridge for approximately 60 days.

After, sow the seeds 1 to 2 cm deep in moist, organic-rich soil. Germination typically occurs in 10 to 14 days.

Common water parsnip prefers a sunny or partially shaded environment and consistently moist soil, making it an ideal plant for marshy areas or along the edges of streams.
