Bottlebrush grass (Elymus hystrix) is a perennial grass that can reach a height of up to 110 cm. This plant is characterized by its long, narrow, and slightly wavy rich green leaves, which stand elegantly upright. In summer, bottlebrush grass produces delicate flower spikes that gently arch, adding a touch of lightness to the landscape. The spikes, measuring 10 to 15 cm long, are often covered with fine hairs, giving them a silky appearance. This grass prefers moist, well-drained soils and is commonly found in woodland habitats, prairies, or along riverbanks. It is hardy and adapts well to the conditions of Quebec.

Ecological Role
This grass plays an important role in preserving ecosystems, as it contributes to soil stabilization with its extensive root system. Bottlebrush grass is also beneficial for biodiversity, providing habitat and a food source for various insects and birds. Its flower spikes attract pollinators such as bees, thereby promoting the pollination of surrounding plants. By cultivating bottlebrush grass, one contributes to creating a healthy and balanced environment in gardens and natural spaces.

Bottlebrush grass seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Bottlebrush Grass

Creeping wild rye seeds require cold stratification to optimize germination.

Mix the seeds with moist vermiculite and place the mixture in the refrigerator for about 30 days. Once the stratification period is complete, sow the seeds on the surface of a light, well-drained substrate, ensuring they are not buried, as they need light to germinate.

This grass prefers full sun or partial shade and thrives in organically rich, consistently moist soils.

Regular watering is necessary during the germination phase, and the soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged. Once established, creeping wild rye is relatively drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. It self-seeds and can form attractive colonies over time. To encourage healthy growth, it is recommended to cut back the dry stems at the end of winter.
