Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a slow-growing, small ornamental tree, generally reaching about 5 m in height. It is distinguished by its spectacular flowering in early spring: before the leaves appear, its branches are covered with small magenta-pink flowers that emerge directly from the wood, even on the trunk. Its heart-shaped foliage, light green in spring, becomes medium green in summer and golden yellow in fall. Its shape is often rounded or spreading, with gracefully arched branches.
In Quebec, eastern redbud grows mainly in the warmest areas of the southern part of the province, particularly in sheltered locations. It prefers rich, deep, well-drained soils but tolerates a wide range of substrates, including calcareous or slightly clay soils, provided they are not waterlogged.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The flowers of eastern redbud are edible; they have a slightly tangy flavour and can be added to salads or used as decorative garnishes. The young tender pods are also edible, raw or cooked, although they are rarely used.

Ecological roles
Eastern redbud provides notable ecological value in open habitats and forest edges. Its early flowering offers an important source of nectar for bees and the first pollinators of spring. Its pods, produced at the end of summer, serve as food for certain birds and small mammals.

Eastern redbud seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Eastern Redbud

Eastern redbud grows in full sun or part shade in rich, deep, well-drained soils and also tolerates slightly clayey or calcareous substrates, provided they are not waterlogged.

The seeds require scarification by soaking, followed by a 60-day cold stratification period.
Scarification: Soak the seeds in hot water for 24 hours.
Stratification: Mix the seeds with a moist substrate (such as vermiculite) and place the mixture in an airtight Ziploc-style bag in the refrigerator for about 60 days. This step can be carried out naturally by sowing outdoors in fall.

Then sow 6 mm deep in a moistened, well-drained substrate, keeping it consistently moist until germination. Germination generally occurs after 20 to 30 days.
