Wildflower Meadow Mix - Clay Soils

Context: Heavy and compact soils, residential clay soils

Objectives: Provide a floral mix resistant to compaction and heavy soils

Constraints: Species adapted to clay, tolerance of periodic stagnant moisture

Mix description:

The Clay Soils mix is designed for residential sites with heavy, compacted, or clay-rich soils. It establishes a native wildflower meadow capable of thriving despite limited soil aeration and the dense structure typical of clay soils.

Composed of species adapted to clay soils and tolerant of occasional surface moisture, this mix forms a resilient and long-lasting plant cover. Its staggered blooms create a functional and colourful planting, well suited to areas where clay soils often pose challenges for conventional landscaping.

The Clay Soils mix is intended for heavy or compacted soils that may retain moisture temporarily, but do not remain permanently saturated. For soils that stay waterlogged or saturated for extended periods, choose the Wetlands mix instead.

Each packet covers approximately 100 square feet.

Minimum height: 50 cm

Maximum height: 150 cm

Some seeds in this mix require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the growing notes below for more details.

Lumière : Sun, part shade
Stratification : 60 to 90 days
Semences par pied carré :

Some seeds in this mix require cold stratification to germinate. If you directly sow outdoors in the fall, stratification will occur naturally, and germination will take place in the spring.

For spring sowing, you will need to perform cold stratification before planting.

Mix the contents of the packet with a moist substrate (vermiculite, seed-starting mix, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days.

Check on your seeds regularly while they're stratifying. As soon as you see radicles emerging (those little white tips poking out of the seeds), take them out of the fridge and sow them right away, even if the recommended stratification period isn't quite finished yet.

Once germination starts, every day matters: wait too long and sowing becomes impossible, the sprouts tangling into a mess you can't pull apart without snapping them.

When it is time to sow, whether in the fall or the spring following stratification, add 2 to 3 litres of substrate (vermiculite, seed-starting mix, or sand) and mix well. This additional volume will help you distribute the seeds more evenly across the entire surface.
