American sloughgrass (Beckmannia syzigachne) is an upright perennial grass that typically grows 60 to 90 cm tall, forming dense clumps in moist to waterlogged soils. Its stems bear flat, pale to bright green leaves up to 25 cm long. The inflorescence is a narrow, elongated panicle composed of many tightly packed spikelets arranged along an angular axis. When mature, the panicle turns a characteristic pale golden colour. This species is commonly found in wet meadows, ditches, marshes, and along the banks of water bodies across Canada and the northern United States. It does not tolerate prolonged drought but adapts well to periodic flooding and soils rich in organic matter.

Sociability index: 4 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.

Ecological roles
American sloughgrass plays an important role in wetland ecosystems by helping to stabilize banks and prevent erosion. Its seeds provide food for ducks and other waterfowl, while its dense foliage offers shelter for aquatic invertebrates and young amphibians. It often forms a protective vegetative cover in marshes, contributing to the diversity and ecological resilience of these habitats.
