Giant ironweed (Vernonia gigantea) is an imposing perennial that adds height and elegance to gardens, often reaching over 2.5 metres. Atop its robust, upright stems, it produces clusters of vibrant purple flowers, each consisting of 30 to 50 small blooms. Its dark green lanceolate leaves contrast with its flowers bright colour, adding a dramatic touch to the landscape. Versatile and easy to grow, giant ironweed adapts well to various soil types and attracts a multitude of pollinators.
Ecological Roles
Giant ironweed plays an essential ecological role by attracting a wide variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other insects. Its flowers provide a valuable source of nectar at the end of the season. Additionally, it attracts birds that come to feed on its seeds in the fall. Its large size and sturdiness also make it an excellent plant for stabilizing soils, and it is perfectly suited for natural gardens and ecological restoration projects, where it supports local biodiversity.
Giant ironweed seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
