Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum) is an ornamental perennial grass, easily recognized by its fluffy, silky seed heads, which transition from pale pink to golden beige as the season progresses. This plant reaches between 20 and 50 cm in height and is appreciated in meadows and grasslands for its delicate, wind-swept appearance. Foxtail barley thrives in poor, well-drained soils and prefers sunny locations. However, it can become invasive in certain environments as it spreads easily through its abundant seeds.
Ecological Roles
Foxtail barley plays a role in soil stabilization due to its dense root system. Its fluffy seed heads produce an abundance of seeds that provide food for small mammals and seed-eating birds, such as sparrows. In natural meadows and along roadsides, it can spread quickly and dominate certain areas, which can make it invasive in some environments.
Foxtail barley seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
