Scotch Lovage (Ligusticum scoticum), also known as sea lovage or sea parsley, is a native perennial herb found in the North Atlantic coastal regions, thriving in saline soils and maritime environments. It grows to a height of 30 to 60 cm and features dark green, compound, finely serrated leaves that resemble parsley. In summer, it produces umbels of small white flowers, attracting a variety of pollinators. Scotch Lovage is particularly resilient to coastal conditions and is commonly found along seaside cliffs and dunes.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Scotch Lovage has carminative, digestive, and diuretic properties. Its leaves, with a taste similar to celery and parsley, are used as a culinary herb. They can be consumed raw in salads or cooked to add flavour to soups, stews, and sauces. Both the root and the leaves have traditionally been used in infusions to stimulate digestion and ease gastrointestinal discomfort.
Ecological Roles
Scotch Lovage plays a vital ecological role in coastal environments by stabilizing saline soils and preventing erosion with its robust root system. It attracts various pollinators, including bees, which benefit from its umbrella-like flowers. This plant is a valuable addition to coastal gardens, where it supports biodiversity and enhances marine ecosystems resilience.
Scotch lovage seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
