Canada Germander (Teucrium canadense), also known as American germander, is a native perennial plant that typically grows between 60 and 90 cm in height. It is distinguished by its spikes of pale pink to lavender flowers, which bloom in the summer at the top of sturdy, square stems. Its dark green foliage, consisting of finely serrated, lance-shaped leaves, adds an interesting texture to naturalized gardens. Adapted to wet environments, this plant thrives along waterways, in moist meadows, and other marshy areas.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Canada germander has antiseptic, tonic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, its leaves and stems were used in infusions to treat inflammations and support the digestive system. It is sometimes used in herbal medicine for its soothing effects on mucous membranes and to stimulate digestion.

Ecological Roles
Canada germander plays an important ecological role by attracting many pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and some hummingbirds, thanks to its nectar-rich flowers. It also helps stabilize wet soils, making it an ideal choice for shorelines and riparian areas. As a native plant, it supports local biodiversity by providing food resources for pollinating insects.

Canada germander seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Canada Germander

Canada germander prefers moist, well-drained soils and a location in full sun or partial shade.

The seeds benefit from a 60-day cold stratification period to promote germination. To do this, mix one part seeds with three parts of a moist substrate (such as vermiculite) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

Alternatively, you can also sow them in the fall for natural stratification to occur.

Once established, Canada germander can spread quickly through its rhizomes and may require some control to prevent it from becoming invasive in small gardens.
