Water avens (Geum rivale) is a perennial that reaches heights of 30 to 60 cm. It produces drooping bell-shaped flowers, typically ranging from pink to purple, between May and July. Adapted to moist soils, it thrives in wet meadows, stream banks, and shaded woodlands. The plant prefers partially shaded environments and grows well in poorly drained or marshy soils. Its dark green, serrated leaves provide interesting texture to the garden throughout the growing season.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The root is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aromatic, astringent, diaphoretic, antipyretic, stomachic, styptic, and tonic. Traditionally, it has been used as a remedy for sore throats and respiratory infections. The roots of water avens can also be boiled to create a chocolate-flavoured beverage and can be used as a condiment. The roots are preferably harvested in spring or autumn. They were once used to add flavour to certain alcoholic drinks.

Ecological Role
Water avens is primarily pollinated by bees and, to a lesser extent, by flies and beetles. It provides valuable nectar to pollinators during the spring and summer months, particularly in wet ecosystems. Its seeds cling to the fur of animals, aiding in the natural dispersal of the species. Additionally, the plant helps stabilize the banks of waterways, playing a role in combating erosion.

Water avens seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Water Avens

Water avens prefers moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It thrives in locations with full sun or partial shade.

Water avens seeds require a 60-day cold stratification period to germinate successfully. To do this, mix one part seeds with three parts of a moist substrate (such as vermiculite) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

Alternatively, you can also sow them in the fall for natural stratification to occur.

Once established, the plants require little maintenance, except for regular watering in excessively dry environments. They tolerate rich, moist soils and can naturalize in meadows or along stream banks.
