Tansy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) is an annual plant native to the southwestern United States, known for its remarkable ability to attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds. Its finely divided, tansy-like leaves are covered with short, stiff hairs, adding an interesting texture to the garden. At the top of its stems, this phacelia produces beautiful clusters of lavender-blue flowers with prominent stamens, arranged in delicate spirals that enhance its charm.

Ecological Roles
Tansy phacelia plays an important ecological role in gardens by supporting a diverse range of pollinators. Its nectar-rich flowers provide an essential food source for bees and butterflies while also attracting hummingbirds, which help pollinating surrounding plants. Thanks to its abundant and prolonged flowering period, it helps sustain pollinator populations and promotes biodiversity. This plant is an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens and flower borders, bringing colour and essential ecological benefits.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Tansy Phacelia

Tansy phacelia can be direct-seeded outdoors. Since it germinates best in cool soil (between 15 and 18 Celsius), you can start sowing early in the spring once frost risk has passed and the soil begins to warm up.

Make sure to select a site where the soil is clear of weeds, well-drained, and nutrient-rich. Phacelia grows best in soil rich in organic matter. Spread the seeds on the surface of the prepared soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil about 5 mm thick.

Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes 5 to 10 days. Thin seedlings to 15 cm apart.
