Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small tree with lush foliage that evokes a tropical ambiance, although it is native to the eastern United States and southern Ontario. It produces a large greenish-yellow fruit weighing between 150 and 450 grams, which can be grown in Quebec in zone 5, and sometimes even in zone 4 under the right conditions. Its yellow, creamy, and sweet flesh has exotic flavours reminiscent of banana, mango, and pineapple. In addition to being eaten fresh, this unique fruit is prized for its versatility in cooking.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Papaw fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals. Their creamy texture and tropical taste make them particularly popular for fresh consumption. Pawpaw can also be used to prepare ice creams, desserts, or even smoothies. Its flesh is rich and sweet, making it a delicious local alternative to tropical fruits. The seeds and skin are not edible and should be removed before consumption.
Ecological Role
Pawpaws contributes to local biodiversity by attracting a variety of insects, including some specialized pollinators that depend on its flowers. Its fruits, once fallen to the ground, feed various wildlife, including squirrels and birds, thus playing a role in the ecological cycle of forests. Obtain seeds and help us propagate pawpaws throughout the province!
