Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small tree with lush foliage that evokes a tropical ambiance, although it is native to the eastern United States and southern Ontario. It produces a large greenish-yellow fruit weighing between 150 and 450 grams, which can be grown in Quebec in zone 5, and sometimes even in zone 4 under the right conditions. Its yellow, creamy, and sweet flesh has exotic flavours reminiscent of banana, mango, and pineapple. In addition to being eaten fresh, this unique fruit is prized for its versatility in cooking.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Papaw fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals. Their creamy texture and tropical taste make them particularly popular for fresh consumption. Pawpaw can also be used to prepare ice creams, desserts, or even smoothies. Its flesh is rich and sweet, making it a delicious local alternative to tropical fruits. The seeds and skin are not edible and should be removed before consumption.

Ecological Role
Pawpaws contributes to local biodiversity by attracting a variety of insects, including some specialized pollinators that depend on its flowers. Its fruits, once fallen to the ground, feed various wildlife, including squirrels and birds, thus playing a role in the ecological cycle of forests. Obtain seeds and help us propagate pawpaws throughout the province!

Growing Notes - Stratified pawpaw (Asimina Triloba) seeds

Pawpaw seeds require 90 to 120 days of cold and moist stratification, a process we have already started. Therefore, our seeds will be ready to start germinating around the end of February. If you wait longer, check the seeds in your fridge from time to time to ensure they haven't started to sprout.

When the time comes, start your seedlings in standard seed-starting mix.

Germination is relatively slow and begins with the emergence of a long taproot. Therefore, you may not see anything above ground for a while, as the above-ground growth starts only once this taproot is sufficiently established. it is best to choose pots that are deep enough for the taproot.

To improve your chances of success, protect young trees from slugs and rodents, and provide wind protection in winter.

Pawpaw is a slow-growing understory tree that will need shade during its early years, as direct sunlight can quickly kill your tree. Once mature, it can tolerate more sunlight, which may even help its productivity, provided it is protected from strong winds and adequately watered. It prefers rich, deep, moist, but well-drained soils.

Weed control around the trees, using straw or wood chip mulch, is important to increase the survival rates and will help retain soil moisture.
