Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), also known as bee balm, is a spectacular and aromatic native perennial prized for its lilac to pink flowers that bloom in summer. This plant typically reaches up to 90 cm in height and exudes a unique fragrance, reminiscent of citrus, thyme, and oregano. Adapted to well-drained soils and sunny locations, wild bergamot is more resistant to fungal diseases than other bee balm species, making it a resilient choice for naturalized gardens. It attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds, enriching local biodiversity.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The leaves and flowers are expectorant, antiseptic, carminative, and mildly analgesic. In infusions, it is commonly used to soothe respiratory symptoms such as coughs and sore throats due to its expectorant properties. The plant is also applied externally to treat cuts and minor infections because of its antiseptic effects. In cooking, fresh or dried leaves and flowers add a unique flavour and a splash of colour to salads, teas, and other dishes, bringing an original aromatic touch.

Ecological Roles
Wild bergamot plays an essential role in local ecosystems by attracting a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, all drawn to its abundant nectar. Due to its disease resistance and ease of cultivation, it is ideal for naturalized gardens, where it contributes to biodiversity and provides a valuable food source for native insects and birds.
