False sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) is a North American native perennial often found along forest edges, in clearings, and prairies. This hardy ornamental plant can reach a height of 1.25 metres, with a bright yellow, abundant bloom that adds a vibrant touch to gardens. With its deep, fibrous roots, it is ideal for stabilizing soils and preventing erosion, particularly in naturalized landscapes in Quebec. False sunflower attracts numerous butterflies, pollinators, and birds, and is often used as a companion plant in vegetable gardens: it acts as a trap plant, drawing aphids away from nearby vegetable crops.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The plant’s roots have traditionally been used for their astringent and antiseptic properties. A root decoction is used to treat respiratory conditions such as colds and coughs and to soothe sore throats. The roots are also reputed to relieve toothaches when chewed.
Ecological Roles
False sunflower plays a significant ecological role by supporting local wildlife. It attracts various butterflies, pollinators, and birds that rely on its flowers for nourishment and reproduction. Its roots help stabilize soil, particularly in erosion-prone areas, and its ability to attract aphids makes it an ideal trap plant for vegetable gardens, protecting surrounding crops. This perennial is an excellent choice for naturalized gardens and riparian buffers, contributing to biodiversity and ecosystem health.
False sunflower seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
