Canada mannagrass (Glyceria canadensis) is an elegant native grass, well-suited to Quebec’s wetland areas. This perennial plant, reaching about 1 metre in height, is distinguished by its gracefully arching stems, weighted down by its seeds, which add visual interest to natural landscapes. It has rough, sheathed foliage that enhances its robust appearance. Canada mannagrass thrives in marshes, floodplains, open wet woods, and along streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes.
Ecological Roles
Canada mannagrass plays a vital role in wetland ecosystems. With its long, creeping rhizomes, it effectively stabilizes riverbanks and reinforces soils in aquatic and wetland environments, helping prevent erosion and strengthening soil structure. Additionally, this plant provides habitat for insects and small animals in marshes and floodplains, thus supporting local biodiversity. By incorporating Canada mannagrass into riparian plantings and naturalized gardens, we support native wildlife while preserving aquatic habitats.
