White turtlehead (Chelone glabra) is a hardy, robust perennial valued for its ability to thrive in both full sun and partial shade. Reaching up to 1 metre in height, it has upright stems and dark green, lance-shaped, finely toothed leaves. Its unique, turtlehead-shaped flowers, pure white or occasionally tinged with pale pink, appear from late summer to early fall. Well-suited to moist soils, white turtlehead flourishes along the edges of wetland areas, making it an excellent choice for riparian revitalization in Quebec. With its elegant appearance and distinctive blooms, white turtlehead adds visual appeal to wildflower gardens and naturalized landscapes.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
White turtlehead has several medicinal properties. The entire plant is recognized as a tonic, laxative, vermifuge, and febrifuge. It acts as a bitter tonic and mild stimulant, primarily used for treating liver and gallbladder issues and to relieve indigestion. White turtlehead also serves as a stimulant for the lymphatic system.

Ecological Roles
White turtlehead is ecologically valuable for Quebec’s ecosystems, especially in wetland environments. It provides a nectar source for a variety of pollinators, including bumblebees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds, which are drawn to its late-season blooms. By planting white turtlehead in naturalized gardens or along waterways, we help support these essential pollinators and contribute to the preservation of riparian habitats.

White turtlehead seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - White Turtlehead

For best results, sow directly outdoors in late fall, just beneath the soil surface.

For spring planting, a cold stratification period is necessary. Mix the seeds with a damp medium (vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 120 days. Then, spread the seeds on the soil surface, press down to ensure good contact, and keep moist during germination, which should take 7 to 15 days.

This plant adapts to various soil types but prefers rich, cool, and moist soils. White turtlehead needs a consistently moist soil for healthy growth; watering may be necessary during dry periods. It grows rather slowly and may not bloom until its second year.

Pinch growth tips in spring to encourage a compact and bushy growth habit; this is especially important in partially shaded areas, where plants can become tall and leggy. Mature plants can be divided in early spring or fall, although they also spread slowly through rhizomes and self-seed.

This plant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees but is of little interest to deer. It is an excellent choice for wetland plantings, pond or stream edges, woodland borders, or semi-shaded garden areas.
