Blanket flower (Gaillardia pulchella), also known as Indian blanket or firewheel, is a spectacular perennial plant known for its abundant and continuous bloom throughout the summer. It reaches a height of 50 cm and is characterized by its upright stems and narrow, slightly hairy, grey-green leaves. Its bright, multicoloured flowers—red, yellow, pink, and bronze—often display concentric rings, creating a striking display in gardens. Suited to well-drained soils, this plant thrives in full sun, which helps maintain intense blooming with minimal care. Blanket flower is especially popular in naturalized gardens in Quebec, where it brings vibrant colour and is well adapted to local conditions.

Ecological Roles
Blanket flower plays an important role in Quebec's ecosystem as a nectar source for many pollinators. It attracts butterflies, bees, and various other insects, thus contributing to garden biodiversity. With its long and generous blooming period, it is ideal for vegetable gardens to attract pollinators, promoting the pollination of nearby plants. Blanket flower is also an excellent addition to wildflower gardens, bringing colour while supporting local populations of beneficial insects.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Blanket Flower

The ideal time to sow blanket flower seeds is early spring or fall, directly in the ground, so they can germinate as the soil warms.

If you want them to bloom in the first year, however, it is best to start them indoors in April and transplant them to the garden after the last frost.

Blanket flower adapts to various soil types, as long as they are well-drained and not too compacted.

When sowing, avoid covering the seeds, as they need light to germinate.

The plants are so prolific and bloom for such an extended period that they often exhaust themselves and may only last 2 to 3 years.

In some conditions, blanket flowers will self-seed in the garden, and you can also divide the plants in the fall, which will give them a fresh start.
