Canada wild rye (Elymus canadensis) is a perennial native grass that plays a crucial role in soil stabilization, particularly on beaches, dunes, and sites prone to erosion. Like sea lymegrass, this plant is highly effective in preventing erosion thanks to its strong root system. It typically grows to about 1.25 metres in height and produces long, arching seed heads that add an elegant texture to landscaping. Canada wild rye seeds are edible, though they are small and difficult to process, and they also serve as a food source for many seed-eating birds. Beyond its use in stabilizing soils, this plant is often employed in bioremediation projects, helping restore contaminated and degraded soils.

Medicinal and culinary uses
Although the seeds are edible, their small size and the labor required to process them limit their culinary use.

Ecological roles
Canada wild rye plays a significant ecological role, especially as a key plant for stabilizing soils in coastal or disturbed environments. Its dense root system is particularly effective in combating erosion on beaches, dunes, and slopes. The seedlings are vigorous and establish quickly, providing excellent ground cover in the first year, making it an ideal choice for ecological restoration projects. Additionally, its seeds provide nourishment for a wide range of seed-eating birds, contributing to local biodiversity. Canada wild rye is also used in bioremediation efforts, where it helps rehabilitate contaminated soils and restore degraded ecosystems.

Canada wild rye seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Canada Wild Rye

Canada wild rye seeds require cold stratification followed by light for germination.

Mix the seeds with a moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

Then, spread the seeds on the soil surface, press them down to ensure good contact, and keep the soil moist during germination, which should take about 15 days. If needed, you can use a dome or plastic bag, but avoid excessive moisture or heat.
