Canada tick-trefoil (Desmodium canadense) is a perennial plant from the Fabaceae family, known for its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, enriching it naturally. This upright plant can grow between 1 and 1.25 metres tall and is characterized by its abundant, elongated clusters of pink or pink-purple flowers that bloom from July to August. The pea-like flowers are highly attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic or ecological gardens. Canada tick-trefoil thrives in well-drained soils and is particularly suited to prairies, roadsides, and open, sunny areas.

Ecological Roles
Canada tick-trefoil plays a key ecological role due to its nitrogen-fixing properties, improving soil fertility and supporting the growth of surrounding plants. Its large pink flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, which help sustain local biodiversity. As a robust perennial, it also helps stabilize soils, especially in prairies and natural areas, where it can prevent erosion. Canada tick-trefoil is particularly useful in ecological restoration projects or sustainable gardening, where it not only brings vibrant colour but also offers long-term benefits for soil health and ecosystem stability.

Canada tick-trefoil seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Canada Tick-trefoil

A 60-day cold stratification period is necessary to ensure germination of Canada tick-trefoil seeds.

Mix the seeds with a moist substrate (such as vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

After this period, you can sow the seeds 5 mm deep. Make sure the soil does not dry out during germination, which takes about 15 days.

Canada tick-trefoil can adapt to various soil types, but it prefers cool or moist locations.
