Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) is an extremely popular annual plant, renowned for its abundant blooms that last from July until the first frosts. This plant is a real asset to any garden, with its delicate, vibrant flowers in shades ranging from white to pink to deep purple, all with bright yellow centers. The flowers stand gracefully atop stems that can exceed one metre in height. Cosmos is not only valued for its beauty but also for its ability to attract a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it an excellent companion plant for vegetable gardens and ecological landscapes. It prefers well-drained soils and thrives in full sun, though it can tolerate light partial shade.

Ecological Roles
Cosmos plays a crucial role in promoting biodiversity in the garden by attracting a variety of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This plant contributes to ecosystems health by supporting pollination of neighboring plants, especially in vegetable gardens where it aids in the production of fruits and vegetables. Its long blooming season provides a continuous resource for pollinators throughout the growing season. In addition to its benefits for insects, cosmos is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners, thanks to its ease of cultivation and ability to tolerate varying conditions, helping to create dynamic and sustainable garden spaces.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Cosmos

Some may prefer to start cosmos seeds indoors and transplant them into the garden when they reach 10 to 15 centimetres, which helps produce stronger plants. However, you can easily sow cosmos seeds directly outdoors after the last frost.

Easy to grow, cosmos doesn’t require special care and tolerates poor soils and even drought. In fact, overly rich soil may encourage more foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
