Sallow sedge (Carex lurida) is a perennial herbaceous plant known for its bright yellow-green foliage that forms attractive cascading clumps. Typically reaching 45 cm in height, it is ideal for wet environments such as water gardens, marshy areas, or the edges of ponds. It tolerates flooding well. While it prefers moist soils, sallow sedge also adapts to average soils, making it a flexible choice for various garden settings. In June, it produces spiky green seed heads that persist throughout the summer, turning brown in the fall and providing a valuable food source for seed-eating birds.

Ecological Roles
Sallow sedge plays a major ecological role in Quebec’s wetlands. Its spiky seeds, which last until the fall, serve as a food source for seed-eating birds. Additionally, with its dense root system, it helps stabilize wet soils and prevents erosion in marshy areas and around water bodies. Beyond supporting wildlife with its seeds, sallow sedge attracts a variety of beneficial insects that find shelter in its dense foliage. Its presence in natural gardens or wetland ecosystems enriches biodiversity and helps maintain balanced, healthy ecosystems.

Sallow sedge seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Sallow Sedge

Sallow sedge seeds require cold stratification followed by light exposure for successful germination.

Sprinkle the seeds and press them lightly onto the soil surface in a container, then place the container in a plastic bag. Leave it in the fridge for 90 days.

After this period, move the container to room temperature and expose it to light, ensuring that the soil surface does not dry out. A light daily misting can help keep the surface moist.

Alternatively, you can sow the seeds directly outdoors in the fall, allowing natural stratification to occur over the winter, though the germination rate may be reduced.

Sallow sedge requires consistently moist, even waterlogged soils, and has no issue tolerating occasional flooding.
