Haskap (Lonicera caerulea) is a perennial shrub that typically reaches a height of 1 to 2 metres. Its slender, often arching branches bear opposite, oval leaves that are bright green. What sets this plant apart are its tubular flowers, usually yellow inside and white outside, which bloom in spring and attract many pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. The fruits, which appear in summer, are edible dark blue berries. Haskap prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils and thrives in full sun or partial shade. It is a hardy plant capable of withstanding the harsh winters of Quebec.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The berries, with their sweet and slightly tart flavour, are not only delicious but also rich in vitamins and antioxidants. They can be eaten fresh, made into jams, jellies, or juices.
Ecological Role
Haskap plays an important role in its ecosystem. Its flowers attract a variety of pollinators, promoting the pollination of other plants. The nutrient-rich berries also provide food for many birds and small mammals. In addition to its benefits for wildlife, this shrub helps stabilize soils and prevent erosion, making it a valuable choice for ecological restoration projects.
Haskap seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
