Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is an exceptional ornamental grass that features bluish-green foliage in the summer, transforming into stunning copper, red, and orange hues in the fall. Its clump-forming shape and upright growth make it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, or as a structural element in perennial gardens.

Ecological Role
Little bluestem is a typical species of wild prairies, drought-resistant and thriving in poor, well-drained soils. Its fluffy inflorescence is filled with seeds and serves as a valuable food source for birds. The deep root system of little bluestem helps stabilize the soil, making it effective for erosion prevention, especially in dry or sandy areas. Additionally, this species serves as a larval host for several skipper butterflies in the Hesperiidae family, thereby supporting local biodiversity.

Drought-resistant and low-maintenance, little bluestem is often found in poor, dry soils, but it will also thrive in other soil types as long as they are well-drained.

Its seeds do not require special treatment and can be sown in the desired location as soon as the risk of frost has passed, compacting them under a thin layer of potting soil.
