Swamp aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum), also called purple-stemmed aster, is an elegant perennial that can reach heights of up to 150 cm. What sets it apart are its stunning purple flowers that bloom in late summer and early autumn. The flower heads, which can reach up to 4 cm in diametre, are composed of numerous fine petals surrounding a golden center. The long, narrow leaves are serrated and grow along upright stems, often slightly hairy. Swamp aster thrives in rich, moist soils, typically in full sun, and can be found in a variety of habitats, such as wet prairies and forest edges.
Ecological Role
Swamp aster plays a crucial role in its ecosystem by providing an essential source of nectar for pollinators. Its flowers particularly attract bees and butterflies, contributing to the pollination of many other plants. By naturalizing in gardens and prairies, swamp aster helps stabilize soils and enrich biodiversity. Its presence in wet habitats also makes it a valuable plant for ecological restoration projects.
Swamp aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
