White panicled aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum) is an attractive perennial that can reach up to 150 cm in height. Its slender silhouette is crowned with ray-like flowers that appear in late summer and early autumn, providing a colourful display. The flowers, which range in shades from blue to violet, are arranged in clusters and attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The long, narrow leaves are dark green and can measure up to 15 cm in length, displaying a slightly rough texture. This species thrives in moist soils, often in sunny or partially shaded areas, and is commonly found in prairies, forest edges, and riparian zones.
Ecological Role
White panicled aster plays an essential role in the ecosystem by providing a valuable source of nectar for many pollinators. Its flowers particularly attract bees, contributing to the pollination of other plant species. By naturalizing in gardens and prairies, the white panicled aster helps stabilize soils and enrich biodiversity. Its ability to thrive in wet conditions also makes it an excellent plant for ecological restoration projects.
White panicled aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
