New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is a native perennial in Quebec, known for its late-season bloom that brightens gardens and landscapes from August to October. This tall aster can reach up to 1 metre in height, producing a profusion of purple flowers with bright yellow centers, creating a stunning visual display. Its dense foliage and sturdy stems make it an ideal plant for landscaping, pollinator gardens, as well as for riverbanks and sloped terrains. Its ability to attract butterflies and other insects makes it a valuable addition to vegetable gardens, where it actively contributes to pollination.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The root is analgesic, astringent, expectorant, and antipyretic.
Ecological Role
In the ecosystem, New England aster plays a crucial role as a late-season nectar source. Its late blooms provide a food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, allowing them to build reserves before winter arrives. Additionally, it helps stabilize soils, particularly along water edges and on slopes, thereby reducing erosion. This robust aster enriches the biodiversity of natural and semi-natural spaces while adding a splash of colour and life to the environments in which it thrives.
New England aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
