Slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus) is a native perennial grass. It forms loose clumps of narrow leaves, light green to bluish green, reaching up to 90 cm in height. The leaves are flat, with a slightly rough texture. In summer, slender flowering stems rise above the foliage, bearing fine, upright spikes of greenish flowers.
This species is widespread in North America and occurs in a variety of habitats, including prairies, streambanks, rocky slopes, and disturbed areas.
Sociability index: 3 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.
Ecological roles
Slender wheatgrass plays an important ecological role. It provides habitat and a food source for various insects and birds. Its root system contributes to soil stabilization, particularly in disturbed areas, helping to prevent erosion.
