Red trillium (Trillium erectum) is an understory herbaceous perennial, recognizable by its three large green leaves arranged in a whorl and its solitary flower borne above them, with petals that are usually dark red, sometimes purplish, greenish, or even white. The flower often emits a strong odour that attracts carrion-pollinating insects. The plant reaches 20 to 40 cm in height. It grows in mixed or deciduous forests of Quebec, in humus-rich, fresh, and slightly acidic soils. Its growth is slow, and it takes several years before reaching maturity and flowering.

Ecological roles
Red trillium is a spring understory plant that flowers early in the season, providing a source of nectar and pollen for the first pollinators, including flies and certain beetles. Its fleshy fruits, containing seeds equipped with an elaiosome, are dispersed by ants (myrmecochory), which contributes to their spread in Quebec forests. The plant is an indicator of mature forests and plays an important role in forest understory diversity.

Red trillium seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Red Trillium

"In order to germinate, red trillium seeds require two 45-day warm stratification periods, alternating with a 60-day cold stratification period

The red trillium seeds offered by Akène are sold in a sealed bag with moistened vermiculite. It is important to keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to start your sowing.

To ensure the seeds are ready to germinate at the beginning of May, they must follow these stratification steps:

Early December: Remove the bag from the refrigerator and keep it at room temperature, away from light and in its original packaging, for 45 days.

Mid-January: Place this same package back in the refrigerator for a second cold stratification period of 60 days.

Mid-March: Finally, return it to room temperature, away from light, for a last warm stratification period of 45 days.

Your seeds will then be ready to germinate at the beginning of May, but monitor them closely as some may begin to germinate during this period.

Sow the seeds 3 mm deep in a well-drained substrate.

Germination usually occurs between 30 and 90 days after this process. Keep the substrate consistently moist to reproduce natural germination conditions."
