Red fescue (Festuca rubra) is a native perennial grass. It forms dense tufts of fine, dark green leaves, reaching up to 60 cm in height. The leaves are thread-like, with a soft texture and a slight sheen. In summer, slender flowering stems rise above the foliage, bearing open panicles of greenish to purplish flowers.

This species is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and is found in a variety of habitats, including meadows, coastal dunes, open forests, and alpine areas.

Sociability index: 3 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.

Ecological roles
Red fescue plays an important ecological role. It provides habitat and a food source for various insects and small mammals. Its dense root system contributes to soil stabilization, especially in areas prone to erosion, such as slopes and dunes.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Red Fescue

Red fescue is a hardy plant that prefers well-drained soils and grows well in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates some drought once established and is also suited to poor, sandy soils.

Red fescue seeds do not require stratification to germinate. They should be sown on the surface of the substrate, without covering, as exposure to light promotes optimal germination.
