Path rush (Juncus tenuis), also called poverty rush or slender rush, is a slender perennial plant forming small tufts, usually 20 to 60 cm tall. Its fine, straight, light green stems resemble stiff threads. The narrow, reduced leaves are concentrated at the base of the plant, while the brownish inflorescences appear on the side of the stems just below their tips. In late summer, the small golden-brown capsules contain tiny seeds.

A common and adaptable species, path rush grows in a wide range of habitats such as ditches, paths, clearings, wet meadows, and slightly compacted areas. It tolerates both moist and temporarily dry soils and is found throughout Quebec, from the southern regions to the boreal zone.

Sociability index: 3 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.

Ecological roles
Path rush contributes to soil stabilization and the regeneration of disturbed environments. Its fine, spreading roots limit erosion and allow it to quickly colonize compacted or trampled ground. It also provides shelter for small invertebrates and helps maintain soil moisture. Its discreet flowering attracts a few pollinating insects specialized in open, wet habitats.

Path rush seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the growing notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Path Rush

Path rush grows well in full sun or part shade. It adapts to compacted or lightly disturbed soils and establishes easily in open habitats.

The seeds require a 60-day cold and moist stratification period. To do this, mix the seeds with three parts of moist vermiculite, place this mixture in a sealed plastic bag, and refrigerate it for about 60 days. This step can also be carried out naturally by outdoor sowing in the fall.

Sow on the soil surface without covering, as the seeds need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist without waterlogging. Germination generally occurs after 8 to 10 days.
