Frost aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum), also known as old field aster, is a perennial plant of open, well-drained habitats, forming airy clumps reaching up to 150 cm in height. Its stems are slender, upright and slightly hairy to the touch. The leaves are narrow, simple and elongated. The abundant white flowering occurs late in the season, from late summer into fall. The species grows in full sun in dry prairies, old fields, gravelly soils and well-drained roadsides, where it readily establishes and self-seeds. Furthermore, asters (Symphyotrichum spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a high diversity of beneficial insects and caterpillars, which in turn supports the food web for birds.
Ecological roles
Frost aster is a major nectar source in late season, particularly important for overwintering bumblebee queens, solitary bees and hoverflies. It is also visited by several butterfly species seeking late nectar. Its late flowering fills a critical gap in fall floral availability. Its root system contributes to light soil stabilization in open and disturbed habitats.
Frost aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
